PHOENIX, Ariz. (February 24, 2019) – Northern Arizona University's women's golf program participated in the final round of the GCU Spring Invitational this past weekend at the GCU Championship Golf Course in Phoenix, Ariz., and were led behind
Elle Kocourkova's impressive three-under par performance in that round.
NAU would finish the Invite with three golfers in the top-25 on the individual leaderboard. The 'Jacks placed 15
th as a team, moving up one spot from their place at the end of the first day of competition. As a team they shot 56-over par.
Toledo won the team championship. The individual winner went to Teresa Toscano of Siuth Dakota State.
In the third round NAU shot 11-over par.
Kocourkova ended the tournament in a tie for 25
th-place after shooting nine-over par at the conclusion of all three rounds.
"Elle played well today and wasn't going to be denied," said head women's golf coach
Brad Bedortha. "She was able to perform the way she knew she could and performed great."
Ashley Croft and
Aleksandra Chekalina both tied for 19
th-place after going eight-over par. Croft was only one-over par in the third round and Chekalina was two-over par.
"I know Aleksandra did not finish the third round the way she wanted to but she and Ashley both competed really well," added Bedortha.
Sara Padilla would place 97
th. She went 11-over par in the third round to bring her total to 31-over par.
"I think moving forward we need to keep our newcomers consistent and playing at this kind of level," concluded Bedortha. "A big part of what we also need to do is get our other student-athletes back up to that same level.
Lexi Keene is out for the foreseeable future and we need to find out what is going on with
Loren Skibba's injury. There will be a lot to work on with whoever fills those roles but getting them on par with our newcomers is extremely important right now."
NAU will return to the golf course on March 11
th for the Arizona Wildcat Invitational hosted by the University of Arizona in Tucson, Ariz.
