FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (March 9, 2019) - Northern Arizona University's golf team is set to compete at the Wildcat Invitational hosted by the University of Arizona on Monday, March 5th at the Sewailo Golf Club in Tucson, Ariz.Â
UofA will play host to a 17 team field will include the Lumberjacks, Arizona State, University of Denver, Fresno State, GCU, Iowa, Iowa State, Long Beach State, Michigan, NAU, University of New Mexico, New Mexico State, Oregon, Oregon State, Purdue, San Diego State and UNLV.Â
The tournament begins Monday morning at 7:30 a.m. MST with a shotgun start. The field will be playing 36 holes on Monday, followed by 18 holes to close it out on Tuesday.
The course features a par of 72 and is 6,494 yards.
The Wildcats are currently the defending NCAA Division I Women's Golf National Champions making this one of the most competitive fields the 'Jacks have had to play against all season. At the time of publication the UofA is ranked no. 10 in the country. ASU is also ranked at no. 17. OSU received five votes but are just outside of the top-25.
"We are excited to get back into action action at UofA," said head women's golf coach
Brad Bedortha. "The field is incredibly good so it will be a great challenge for us. With the weather we have had here in Flagstaff we have had to make some modifications to our training; luckily we have been able to go to the Agave Highlands Golf Course to practice."
NAU is coming off of a strong third round performance that was played during the last day of the GCU Invite on Feb. 24th. The 'Jacks were led by
Elle Kocourkova's three-under par performance in that round.Â
Kocourkova will be joined by teammates
Aleksandra Chekalina,
Ashley Croft,
Emma Reyes and
Sara Padilla.
Ashley Croft and
Aleksandra Chekalina also both had successful performances at the Lumberjacks last tournament. The pair tied for 19
th-place after going eight-over par. Croft was only one-over par in that third round.
"We have put in some really good practices and have been working with our Vision54 information," concluded Bedortha. "Ultimately we want to continue to build a foundation of doing the right things and believing that we can do them consistently. I've been proud of the recent progress our team has made and we look forward to seeing if we can transition that onto the field of play."
