OGDEN, Utah (April 10, 2019) – After a record-breaking weekend filled with gutsy efforts, Northern Arizona women's tennis senior
Hanneke Lodewijks was honored as the Big Sky Player of the Week on Wednesday for the first time this season and fourth time in her career.
Lodewijks helped NAU to a pair of crucial home victories against Weber State, 5-2, and Southern Utah, 6-1. The 'Jacks jumped past both teams in the Big Sky standings after handing both the Wildcats and Thunderbirds just their second respective losses in league play. Lodewijks went 2-0 in doubles and 2-0 in singles.
The Breda, Netherlands native, who last week was also named NAU's Golden Eagle Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year, delivered the match-clinching victory last Saturday against Weber State at No. 2 singles. Lodewijks staved off match point in the third set and rallied for a 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 victory over Yuuna Ukita. Earlier in the day, Lodewijks and sophomore
Ellie Millard posted their first of two doubles wins, 6-2, at No. 2 doubles.
Lodewijks followed that up with her school record 54th career doubles victory on Sunday versus Southern Utah, while once again rallying back from down match point. Lodewijks and Millard recorded a 7-5 win against Daniela Cozzi and Ghita Nassik that clinched the doubles point.
She wrapped up the weekend with her second three-set singles victory over Charity Sagiao, 6-1, 6-7(0), 6-1.
Like her team, who has won a season-best five straight matches, Lodewijks is on streaks of her own having won three straight singles matches and five straight doubles matches.
NAU heads out on the road to Montana State and Montana this weekend before concluding the regular season at home next weekend.
