FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (April 17, 2019) - The Northern Arizona University golf program will be heading back to the Silver State for the third time during the 2018-19 season this weekend for the 2019 Big Sky Conference Championships which will take place on Friday, April 19 through Sunday, April 21 in Boulder City, Nev.
This will be the 26th Big Sky Women's Golf Championship tournament. Big Sky teams will compete for the conference's automatic team bid to the 2019 NCAA Regionals. The first set of teams will tee off at 7 a.m. PT on Friday. Pairings are determined by the team's Golfstat Division Ranking.
Northern Arizona currently has the most Big Sky titles in league history with eight. This weekend the Lumberjacks will strive to achieve their ninth Big Sky Conference title in program history.
Idaho, the reigning conference champions, enter the weekend with the second-best ranking, as it looks to go back-to-back in Boulder City. The Big Sky titles have been spread out amongst four teams for the last five years – Portland State (2014), Northern Arizona (2015), Idaho (2016, 2018), and Sacramento State (2017). The last team to win back-to-back crowns was Portland State in 2010 and 2011.Â
The Blue & Gold will be represented by a starting five that the Lumberjack faithful have grown to know well. NAU's three leads will be the strong freshmen class of
Aleksandra Chekalina,
Ashley Croft and
Elle Kocourkova.
Sara Padilla and
Emma Reyes will both be making an appearance at the 2019 Big Sky Championship.
NAU is coming off of a seventh-place finish at the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic that saw three 'Jacks place in the top-20 on the individual player leaderboard.
Sara Padilla is fresh off of a notable performance at the Classic as she had one of her best finishes of the year after forging a one-over 73 showing in the final round.Â
"We have had a really good week of practice," said head women's golf coach
Brad Bedortha. "We like that we have been playing well. It will be a great environment for the girls and we are looking forward to seeing them compete. Hopefully our recent performances will carry over to the championship."Â
