COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (September 13, 2019) – Senior
Chiara Tomasetti moved on to the Flight A singles semifinals and the Northern Arizona women's tennis team went 4-2 in doubles action to highlight Friday's day two action at the ITA Bedford Cup in the Mountains.
Tomasetti, who finished as the runner-up in her singles main draw last year at the Bedford Cup in the Mountains, will play for a chance to compete in the championship match for a second year in a row. She reached the semifinals after defeating Stella Cliffe of Colorado State, 6-2, 6-4.
Like Tomasetti, freshman
Mimi Bland continued her run in the Flight B main draw as she notched a quarterfinal win versus New Mexico's Natasha Munday, 6-3, 6-4, to remain unbeaten in the tournament hosted by Air Force.
Two other Lumberjacks posted singles victories on Friday with sophomores
Emilie Haakansson and
Adrianna Sosnowska knocking off a pair of opponents from Big Sky rival Southern Utah. Sosnowska easily defeated Jessica Stefan, 6-1, 6-3, while Haakansson battled her way to a three-set win. Haakansson rebounded from a first-set loss to defeat Daniela Cozzi, 3-6, 6-3, 10-8.
The doubles draws started on the second day of the tournament and NAU got off to a fast start. All three of the Blue & Gold's doubles pairings won their opening round match with Haakansson and Sosnowska advancing to the semifinals in Flight A. Haakansson and Sosnowska need a tiebreak to get past New Mexico's tandem of Sara Kuuttila-Webbert and Danielle Quevado, 8-7(6), before picking up an 8-5 win over Colorado State's Emily Luetschwager and Priscilla Palmero, 8-5, in the second round.
Also in Flight A, Tomasetti and junior
Ellie Millard earned their first win of the fall against Colorado State's Alyssa Grijalva and Stella Cliffe by an 8-6 score. Meanwhile, NAU's freshmen duo of Bland and
Elinor Beazley defeated Northern Colorado's Sandra Keta and Natalie Stanton, 8-4, in Flight B. Both pairings lost their second round matches.
Saturday's matches will begin at 8 a.m. MST at the Air Force Academy.
