COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (September 15, 2019) – The second time around at the ITA Bedford Cup in the Mountains proved to be much sweeter than the first for senior
Chiara Tomasetti. After falling in the championship match a year ago to Air Force's TJ Fumagalli, Tomasetti avenged the loss on Sunday to clinch the Flight A singles title to cap a highly successful first fall tournament for the Northern Arizona women's tennis team.
"We love coming to play at the Bedford Cup," said head coach
Ewa Bogusz. "I want to thank the Air Force Academy for hosting us. We got a lot of quality matches in which is what we need this early in the season. Everyone picked up some wins, but most importantly we got better as a team. It was nice to see our freshmen in action as well. There's a lot of work ahead of us, but I really like the dynamic of this team already."
Facing Fumagalli on her home court, Tomasetti turned the tables on her opponent after a 6-4, 6-0 loss at the same tournament last season. On Sunday, Tomasetti dominated the first set then showed resolve after dropping the second set. She ultimately completed a perfect 5-0 Bedford Cup showing with a 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 victory over Fumagalli.
"We are excited for Chiara to have such a strong start to the season," Bogusz said. "She got revenge for last year, which also showed us that she's been improving day in and day out. She proved that she is ready for her next tournament."
Tomasetti enjoyed an undefeated final day overall, partnering with junior
Ellie Millard for a commanding 8-1 doubles win over Montana State's Caitlin Ward and Linnea Fristam. It was NAU's only doubles victory on Sunday.
While NAU went 1-2 in doubles, Tomasetti's championship victory was one of four for the Lumberjacks in a 4-0 performance in singles. Sophomore
Adrianna Sosnowska, freshman
Elinor Beazley and senior
Sydney Roman all posted straight-set wins to complement Tomasetti.
Sosnowska defeated New Mexico's Sara Kuuttila-Webbert, 6-3, 6-4, while Beazley bested Wyoming's Clara Mansart, 6-1, 7-6(6). Roman controlled Ward of Montana State, 6-3, 6-1.
Over the last four days, the 'Jacks totaled 20 singles victories and seven doubles wins. They were particularly strong in singles the last two days, compiling a 9-1 record.
Tomasetti and freshman
Mimi Bland (Flight B) both advanced to their respective semifinals in singles, while Sosnowska and sophomore
Emilie Haakansson reached the semifinals in the Flight A doubles draw.
Next up, Tomasetti will carry her momentum into the Oracle ITA Masters in Malibu, Calif. from Sept. 26-29. The rest of the Lumberjacks will compete in the three-day UNLV Fall Invitational from Sept. 27-29 in Las Vegas, Nev.
