Tomasetti Posts Straight Set Victory to Advance to Oracle ITA Masters Round of 16

MALIBU, Calif. (September 26, 2019) – Northern Arizona women's tennis senior Chiara Tomasetti advanced to Friday's round of 16 in the singles main draw at the Oracle ITA Masters courtesy of her straight set victory over Penn's Iuliia Bryzgalova on Thursday. Tomasetti defeated Bryzgalova, 6-4, 6-4, in first round action at Pepperdine's Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center and earned her second win in as many seasons over her nationally-ranked opponent from Penn.

"Chiara played a hard-fought match," said graduate assistant coach Jordan Gobatie. "She's played this quality opponent in the past and it's never easy playing the same player twice. This time, she managed to maintain a high level and get the job done. This was a great first match (at Masters) to lead into our matchup against the University of Virginia tomorrow."

Tomasetti, seeded No. 17 in the tournament and ranked No. 71 nationally, got the best of Bryzgalova, seeded No. 16 and ranked No. 63, in straight sets to move on to play top-seeded Natasha Subhash of Virginia in the second round. Last season, Tomasetti and Bryzgalova matched up at the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships with the NAU senior winning 5-7, 6-4, 7-6(7).

Tomasetti also competed in the mixed doubles first round with Weber State's Kris van Wyk. The Big Sky's representatives fell to UCF's Valeriya Zeleva and Gabriel Decamps, 7-6(3). The duo will compete in the consolation round on Friday.

In addition to Tomasetti's second round match on Friday, the rest of the Northern Arizona women's tennis team will open the three-day UNLV Fall Invitational in Las Vegas, Nev. at 10 a.m.
