Women’s Tennis Waits Out Rain, Picks Up Four Wins on First Day in Hawaii

RESULTS

HONOLULU, Hawaii (January 9, 2020) –
After rain delayed the first day of the Weinman Foundation Invitational by six hours, the Northern Arizona women's tennis team finally got their spring season started, posting two singles wins and two doubles wins. Senior Chiara Tomasetti and freshman Mimi Bland won both of their matches to lead the Lumberjacks on Thursday.

Tomasetti, ranked No. 57 nationally, easily defeated Washington State's Hikaru Sato, 6-1, 6-2, in her first singles match of the spring while Bland knocked off Louisville's Maia Haumeuller, 7-5, 6-3. Bland was the only Lumberjack to face an opponent from Louisville as a total of four 'Jacks faced off against players from Washington State.

Junior Ellie Millard fell to Washington State's Melisa Ates, ranked No. 103 in the nation, in straight sets, 7-5, 6-1. Sophomore Adrianna Sosnowska similarly battled her opponent, Savanna Ly-Nguyen of Washington State in the first set before falling, 7-5, 6-3.

Junior Madi Moore was a tiebreak point away from earning NAU's third singles win of the day versus Washington State's Jovana Knezevic, but her match went unfinished with Moore leading, 6-2, 6-6(6-4). Senior Sydney Roman's singles match was also unfinished, while sophomore Emilie Haakansson and freshman Elinor Beazley were unable to start their respective matches due to the rain delay.

In doubles, the Lumberjacks split their four matches with Sosnowska and Bland holding serve against a tough Hawai'i pair on their home court. The No. 25 ranked pair triumphed in a tiebreaker against Lea Romain and Bojana Markovic, 7-6(7-3) to start off the spring on a high note.

Tomasetti and Millard faced off against a mixed doubles team consisting of Rebecca Ehn from Hawai'i and Morgan Hall Curtis from BYU and earned a 6-2 doubles win. Both the Lumberjack pairings of Beazley and Haakansson and Roman and Moore dropped closed doubles matches by 6-4 and 7-5 scores respectively.

Weather permitting, the unfinished singles matches will resume at 1 p.m. MST on Friday on the Hawai'i campus.
