Women’s Tennis' Match with BYU Ruled No Winner by ITA

UPDATE (March 5, 2020): Due to a lineup rules violation by BYU, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association has ruled this match no winner. All doubles and singles matches will still count toward individual records.

PROVO, Utah (February 15, 2020) –
The first all-time dual between the Northern Arizona women's tennis team and BYU came down to the wire on Saturday with the Cougars holding off the Lumberjacks for a 4-3 victory. NAU claimed the doubles point and won at the top two singles courts, but fell short of its first victory of the spring and falling to 0-3 overall.

Facing a BYU team that had not dropped the doubles point through its first six dual matches, NAU rose to the occasion with senior Chiara Tomasetti and junior Ellie Millard setting the tone. Tomasetti and Millard rolled Emma Jewell and Helen Jiao, 6-1, at No. 2 to give the Lumberjacks the advantage in doubles.

At No. 3, sophomore Emilie Haakansson and freshman Elinor Beazley clinched the doubles point for NAU with a 6-3 victory over Polina Malykh and Emilee Astle. Haakansson and Beazley notched their first doubles win of the dual season, while also handing Malykh and Astle their first loss of the season as well. After NAU clinched the doubles point, BYU wrapped up doubles with a tiebreak win at No. 1.

Tomasetti was the first player to get on the scoreboard in singles play with a 6-2, 6-4, victory on court one over Kate Cusick Truman. Tomasetti's third win of the dual season gave the 'Jacks a 2-0 lead in the match before the Cougars stormed back.

BYU claimed straight set wins at No. 3, 4 and 6 in succession to move in front, 3-2, in the match putting NAU in a position needing to win the final two singles matches to come away with the team victory.

Sophomore Adrianna Sosnowska got the Lumberjacks one win in a gutsy three-set battle with Leah Heimuli at No. 2. The two players split the first two sets before Sosnowska gutted out the third set in a 6-3, 6-7, 6-4 victory that evened the match at 3-3.

That left Beazley and BYU's Helen Jiao to decide the match at No. 5. After Jiao took the first set, she led Beazley 5-2 in the second set. Beazley refused to back down though, rallying to tie the set at 5-5. However, Beazley's comeback efforts were ultimately turned back with Jiao clinching the victory for BYU in a 6-4, 7-5 decision.

NAU will turn around and face Utah State on Sunday at 11 a.m. in Logan, Utah. The Aggies suffered their first loss of the season to BYU, 5-2, on Friday and are 3-1 overall.
