LAS VEGAS, Nev. (October 13, 2022) – Sending a trio of doubles pairings and seven singles players to the 2022 ITA Mountain Regionals at UNLV's Fertitta Tennis Complex, the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks came away with four singles victories across the first two days of play.
Playing in Flight One of the singles draw on Wednesday,
Sofia Markova opened her tournament with a 6-4, 6-0 victory against Boise State's Holly Stewart. Joining Markova in the victory column on day one were
Ava Neyestani and
Patrycja Niewiadomska in Flight Two of singles play. Neyestani beat New Mexico's Leonie Hoppe 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 and Niewiadomska defeated Utah State's Laura De Hilario 6-1, 6-3.
The trio of Lumberjacks moved on to Thursday's second round, where Neyestani advanced to the Round of 16 with a 6-2, 6-3 victory against BYU's Madison Smith. The junior's run then came to an end with a 6-4, 6-3 loss to Lucia Malinak of Wyoming.
Markova fell in her second-round match to Kaila Barksdale of Utah, 6-4, 6-3 and Niewiadomska fell 6-2, 6-2 to BYU's Yijia Jiao.
On Wednesday,
Laura Duhl and
Daryna Shoshyna fell in Flight One of the singles draw following hard-fought matches. Duhl lost 7-6, 7-5 to Utah State's Zeynep Naz Ozturk and Shoshyna dropped her match 6-1, 2-6, 6-2 to Sydney Fitch of Air Force.
Ana Karen Guadiana Campos also competed in Flight One to open the tournament, falling to Pauline Ernstberger of Boise State 6-4, 6-2. In Flight Two on Wednesday,
Elinor Beazley lost to Dylan Lolofie of Weber State 6-3, 6-4.
Northern Arizona's trio of doubles pairings fell in close matches as well on Wednesday, with Duhl and Guadiana Campos dropping their match 8-5 to New Mexico's Katherine Jhang and Hoppe. Markova and Shoshyna lost 8-6 in their first-round match to Utah State's Lisa Kung and Monique Burton while Beazley and Neyestani's match was the closest of the three, falling 8-7 to Utah's Barksdale and Marcela Lopez.
