FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (November 2, 2022) – Coming up with 10 singles wins and five doubles wins this past weekend in the Wildcat Invitational at Reffkin Tennis Center in Tucson, the Northern Arizona women's tennis team closed out its fall schedule.
Highlighting the weekend for the Lumberjacks, senior
Elinor Beazley won three straight singles matches to earn the victory in the invitational's white draw. Freshman
Daryna Shoshyna won both of her matches after opening the weekend with a bye while sophomore
Laura Duhl earned a pair of victories to open the weekend before falling on the final day.
Sofia Markova,
Ava Neyestani and
Patrycja Niewiadomska all added a singles win over the weekend as well.
In doubles play, Niewiadomska and Neyestani finished with a 2-2 record while Duhl won doubles matches with Beazley and
Ana Karen Guadiana Campos, and Shoshyna and Markova finished with one doubles victory.
Beazley opened the weekend with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Air Force's Alexis Odom and reached her draw's final with a 2-6, 7-6 (6), 6-4 viceroy against Ana Conde Vendrell of Boise State. Tasked with another member of the Broncos on Sunday, Beazley defeated Shauna Heffernan 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 to close out the weekend in singles play.
Meanwhile, Duhl won in straight sets against Arizona's Laura Freidman and Grand Canyon's Aline Buhr, 6-1, 7-5 and 7-5, 6-2 respectively. Falling to Santa Strombacha 6-7, 7-5, 2-6, Duhl narrowly missed a perfect weekend of her own.
Though she played in just two singles matches, Shoshyna finished with an unblemished singles record as she defeated Grand Canyon's Valentina Del Marco 6-1, 6-1 and then beat Joana Baptista from Boise State 6-4, 6-4 to conclude the weekend's schedule.
Markova continued Northern Arizona's success over Grand Canyon, beating the Lopes' Anali Jocevar 6-1, 6-4. Both Neyestani and Niewiadomska's singles victories came against Air Force's Courtney Swift. Neyetani earned a 6-2, 6-4 victory on Saturday with Niewiadomska winning 6-2, 6-0 to conclude her tournament on Saturday.
The two also combined to beat Grand Canyon's Dania Deaifi and Del Marco 6-1, as well as earning a victory against a pairing from Air Force..Duhl's wins in doubles came against Grand Canyon as well, beating Madeline Lamoreaux and Kocevar 7-6 (4) with Beazley and beating Dealifi and Del Marco 6-4 with Gudiana Campos.
Shoshyna and Markova's doubles win together also came against Deaifi and Del Marco with a 6-1 final score.
