FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (February 26, 2022) - NAU Men's Tennis continue their home win streak, with a 4-0 victory to Grand Canyon University, moving their record to 10-4 through spring play.
"Having the home crowd and the community's support is important, it gives us the extra energy and intensity. Just playing in the altitude, we're used to that and we have a good style of play here," Head Coach Maciej Bogusz said.
The Lumberjacks dropped their first doubles match on home courts Friday, as Buzonics and Groves fell in a tough matchup, 4-6 to GCU's pair of Jiri Novak and Adrien Coulome. The team bounced back quickly as Facundo Tumosa and Eban Straker-Meads earned the 6-3 win on court one, and Maciej Ziomber and Daniel Dillon earned a 6-3 win on court three to give the 'Jacks the doubles point.
Tumosa earned a quick 6-2, 6-2 victory on court one, followed by Buzonics who earned a 6-2,6-1 win on court three. As Groves brought in the third singles win and fourth point for the 'Jacks with a 6-3, 6-4 win on court five, the Lumberjacks clinched their eighth straight home win.
Straker-Meads match on court two went unfinished as he battled for a 7-5 first set win, and was behind 1-2 before the match was retired. Ziomber's match on court four went unfinished with a 7-5 first set win and was retired at 2-2 during the second set. Joachim Schaefer played a tough first set, losing 0-6, before stepping up for a 6-3 second set victory, and was up 3-0 before his match retired.
"I think it's going to be fun to open up conference play, it's fun to do it at home. The team is staying the course and we are where we want to be so we're looking forward to next Sunday," Bogusz said.
The Lumberjacks will take the week to practice ahead of their first Big Sky Conference match against Eastern Washington next Sunday. The match will be held at the NAU Aquatic and Tennis Complex, and will begin at 10:00 a.m. MST.
