Lumberjacks Earn First Conference Victory with 7-0 Win to EWU

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (March 6, 2022) NAU Men's Tennis opened up Big Sky Conference play with a 7-0 win to the Eastern Washington Eagles on Sunday in Flagstaff. With today's win, the 'Jacks have extended their overall win streak to four with a 11-4 record, highlighting a nine game home win streak.

The Lumberjacks went 2-1 to open up the match in doubles play, earning the doubles point after wins on courts one and two.

"It feels good to start conference play with a win. I am proud of the way the team overcame a few hiccups at the start of doubles and singles and started to play better and together as the match went on," Head Coach Maciej Bogusz said.

In closely contested matches through all three courts in doubles play, Facundo Tumosa and Eban Straker-Meads earned the 'Jacks a win on court one, 6-3. Followed closely by Dominik Buzonics and Alex Groves claiming victory on court two, 6-3.

Maciej Ziomber and Daniel Dillon fell on court three, after a back and forth match to Eastern Washington's duo of Drew Dillon and Brady Thomas. Dillon of NAU and Dillon of EWU are brothers, the doubles match marked their first collegiate competition facing one another.

Playing in the No. 6 position, Joachim Schaefer made his move quickly, earning the 'Jacks their second point with a 6-1, 6-1 win. Schaefer moves to 4-1 in overall singles play, going undefeated on court six.

Tumosa moved to a 7-4 record in overall singles, after a 6-3, 6-1 at the No. 1 position, to earn the team their third point of the match. Blanking his opponent in the second set, Groves secured the victory for the Jacks with a 6-4, 6-0 win on court five. Groves holds a record of 11-3 in singles.

Quickly following, Ziomber earned a 6-3, 6-1 victory on court four, moving his overall singles record up to 11-2 on the season. After falling down by two in the first set, Buzonics went to work to bounce back at the No. 3 position, bringing in a 6-4, 6-2 victory for the 'Jacks. Buzonics holds a 10-4 singles record.

After a quick 6-0 first set on court two, Straker-Meads fell behind in set two, dropping the set 3-6. Straker-Meads came back in the tiebreaker, earning a 10-3 win and solidifying the sweep for the Lumberjacks.

The team will head on the road this week, where they will take on both Illinois State and UNLV in Las Vegas, NV. The neutral match to Illinois State will take place on Tuesday, March 8, at 6:30 p.m. MST. The 'Jacks will then take on UNLV on Wednesday, March 9 at 11:00 a.m. MST.
