Men’s Tennis Drops Close Match in 4-2 Loss to UNLV

LAS VEGAS, NV. (March 9, 2022) - The Lumberjack Men's Tennis squad fell to the UNLV Rebels on Wednesday afternoon, 4-2, after a closely contested match on all courts.

The 'Jacks dropped two doubles matches to lose the point, before retiring the third match and moving on to singles. Maciej Ziomber and Daniel Dillon suffered a loss to Zach Garner and Christopher Bulus of UNLV, 3-6.

Courts one and two were much closer, as Dominik Buzonics and Alex Groves fell 7-6 in a tiebreaker. Eban Straker-Meads and Facundo Tumosa were tied up at 6-6, as their match went unfinished.

All six singles matches were back and forth play between the two athletes, as NAU was able to bring in two wins on courts two and six. Tumosa dropped his match at the No. 1 position, losing both sets 6-3 to Bulus.

Straker-Meads, at the No. 2 position, won his first set 7-6, and jumped ahead to 4-1 in the second set before his opponent Zac Brodney retired the match, giving the 'Jacks their first point.

Ziomber fell in a 5-7, 4-6 match to UNLV's Zach garner at the No. 4 position after a tough first set loss for the sophomore. Freshman Dani Torres earned a two set 6-4, 6-4 win moving back into the No. 6 position to Thomas Navarro. Buzonics dropped a heartbreaker for the 'Jacks on court three, in a 3-6, 6-4, 2-6 loss to secure UNLV's victory.

Groves dropped his first set at the No. 5 position, 3-6, before coming back to take set two 7-5. The No. 5 match was then retired.

The Lumberjacks move to a 12-5 record ahead of taking on their second Big Sky Conference opponent next week in Sacramento State. The 'Jacks and the Hornets will play in Sacramento on Tues. March 15th, with a start time of 12:00 p.m. MST.
