NAU Swimming and Diving To Host Blue vs. Gold Intrasquad Meet and Arizona Christian

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (October 12, 2023) – The Northern Arizona Swimming and Diving team will return to the pool this Friday as they host their 41st annual Blue vs. Gold intrasquad scrimmage while welcoming the Firestorm from Arizona Christian University.

Featuring 12 events that will get underway at 3 p.m., the swimmers will take part in the 200 medley relay, 200 freestyle, 200 individual medley, 50 freestyle, 150 butterfly, 100 freestyle, 150 backstroke, 500 freestyle, 150 breaststroke and the 400 freestyle relay.

The divers will also be competing in the 1-meter and 3-meter dives during the scrimmage's two diving breaks. Arizona Christian's swimming and diving program will also run heats for their men's and women's teams.

The current senior class divides the blue and gold teams with help from head coach Andy Johns

Pentathlon winner Elsa Musselman will be looking to capitalize on her performance from three weeks ago, scoring 4,120 points and finishing second in four of the five pentathlon events on Sept. 22.

In last season's scrimmage, the gold team came out on top over the blue team 55-49. It came down to the final event to determine the winner, with the 200-yard freestyle relay team of Bena Koehn, Caylah Jago, Sarah Dorrheim and Annie Carlton clinching the victory for the gold.

The gold team will be looking to continue its diving dominance in the blue vs. gold scrimmage, taking second through fifth in the 1-meter dives and the top two spots in the 3-meter dives a season ago.

Margaret and Grace Wesche had banner days on the boards, with Margaret winning the 3-meter dive with a score of 332.95 and was second in the 1-meter with a 300.95. Representing the blue team last season, Grace had the best score for the 1-meter dive, finishing with a 303.75.

Helena Robla-Alvarez will be looking to capture the 200-yard freestyle and the 500-yard freestyle for a third straight year after recording times of 1:55.09 and 5:10.92 last year in the two events, respectively.

Senior Maddy Rey will also be aiming to defend her first-place results in the 150-yard butterfly and the 200-yard individual medley from the 2022 event.

Start time from the Wall Aquatic Center is scheduled for 3 p.m. on Friday afternoon.
