SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (October 24, 2023) – The NAU Women's Tennis team got plenty of match play this past weekend before kicking off the spring season at the ITA All-American Championships at the University of Utah.
Featuring familiar Big Sky Conference opponents in Idaho, Idaho State, Montana, Montana State, and Weber State, the Lumberjacks had all six of their players in the field across five days of singles and doubles action.
In addition to the Big Sky opponents, the non-conference competition consisted of Air Force, Boise State, Colorado, Colorado State, Denver, Nevada, New Mexico, New Mexico State, UNLV, Utah State, Utah Tech, UTEP, and Wyoming.
Day one of the tournament saw four Lumberjacks in the main draw for singles. Holding the No. 13 seed in the main singles draw, Northern Arizona got its lone main draw win from Patrycja Niewiadomska, defeating Utah Tech 6-4, 6-1. In the 'B' draw, Dolavee Tumthong picked up a victory against Air Force in straights 6-0, 6-4.
NAU fell in both doubles matches in the doubles main draw on the opening day.
Following her victory in the Round of 64, Niewiadomska could not make it into the last 16 on day two, falling in straights to Utah 0-6, 5-7. Tumthong would also drop her match in straight sets to Montana State.
After failing to advance in the main draw, Northern Arizona competed in extra matches over the final three days of the tournament.
The first doubles win of the event came on the first day of extra matches, with duo Ava Neyestani and Tumthong earning a 6-2 result over Montana State.
The next day, the Lumberjacks earned three singles and two doubles victories across eight total matches. Singles wins came from Daryna Shoshyna, Neyestani and Tumthong. While the partnerships of Niewiadomska and Tumthong and Shoshyna and Ana Karen Guadiana Campos took care of business in doubles.
Niewiadomska was the lone winner on the final day of extra matches, sweeping Wyoming 6-3, 6-2.
