FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (February 17, 2023) – The Northern Arizona University women's tennis team (2-3) is on the road once again this weekend as they travel to El Paso, Texas and Las Cruces, New Mexico.
The Lumberjacks will first take on the UTEP Miners (2-5) on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. MST. They will then travel New Mexico State, where they will take on the Aggies (2-3) in a Sunday match beginning at 9:00 a.m. MST. NAU is still in search of its first true road victory, with their wins coming at home against the Grand Canyon Lopes and a neutral match against Fresno State.
The 'Jacks are coming off a road trip in which they went 1-3 with a win against Fresno State and losses to Florida Atlantic and Arizona.
Daryna Shoshyna was a bright spot for NAU during the trip, going 2-1 in both singles and doubles. She earned the team's lone point against the Arizona Wildcats and was named Big Sky Co-Player of the Week.
Ana Karen Campos Guadiana was also impressive last weekend, sliding up to play in the number one spot against Florida Atlantic. She had an easy victory, winning 6-2, 6-3 in her first match playing at the top spot. She carried that momentum to the match against Fresno State where she returned to the number two spot, winning the match 6-3, 6-4.
UTEP is 1-2 at home on the season, with their home win coming against Western New Mexico. Their top singles player Carlotta Mencaglia has a two-match win streak and was named C-USA Player of the Week for her efforts last weekend.
The Aggies are 2-2 at home this season, with wins at home against Western New Mexico and Montana State. New Mexico State's Anna Pinaieva has two wins at the number one spot this season, with one coming against NAU's conference rival Montana State. Pinaieva won 6-2, 7-6 (3) to push her team to an easy victory over the Bobcats.
