FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (February 18, 2023) – The Northern Arizona University women's tennis team wrapped up the first day of their weekend road trip with a 5-2 victory over UTEP.
The Lumberjacks went 1-2 In doubles, with
Laura Duhl and
Patrycja Niewiadomska being the only pair to win their match. Duhl and Niewiadomska defeated Carlotta Mencaglia and Eve Daniels 6-4 on court two.
UTEP got the doubles point after winning on courts one and three.
Ava Neyestani and Ana Guadiana fell to Thassane Abrahim and Veronika Lebisova 6-3 on court one, while
Daryna Shoshyna and
Elinor Beazley were defeated by Zuxanna Szczepanska and Elena Dibattista 6-2 on court three.
Despite entering singles play down a point, the 'Jacks rallied and saw dominant, two-set victories on four of six courts.
Daryna Shoshyna was the first NAU player to finish, defeating UTEP's Elena Dibattists 6-4,6-0. The freshman has proven to be a valuable addition to the roster, now 3-2 in singles play and earning recognition as Big Sky Co-Player of the week earlier this season.
Junior
Sofia Markova was next to finish, decisively defeating Veronika Lebisova 6-3, 6-3.
Patrycja Niewiadomska had a tough first set, narrowly winning 7-5. She came back strong in her second set with a 6-1 win to earn her team another point.
Sophomore
Laura Duhl clinched the victory for NAU with her win on court six against Paloma Hennicaux. After dropping the first set 1-6, Duhl rallied to win her next two sets 6-4 and 6-0.
Ava Neyestani was defeated in singles play, but put up a strong fight as she lost consecutive sets 6-4 against Thassane Abrahim.
Ana Karen Guadiana Campos closed out the final match with a victory on court two. The match went to three sets as competition was extremely tough. Guadiana Campos won the first set 6-0, then lost the second set 2-6. The third set went to a tie-break where she came out victorious, ending the final set with a 7-6 victory.
The Lumberjacks will travel to Las Cruces, New Mexico for a match against New Mexico State tomorrow morning at 9:00 a.m. MST. The match can be streamed
