Lumberjacks fall against Owls to open road trip, 4-3

Box Score

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (February 4, 2023) - Northern Arizona Women's Tennis traveled to Tucson for a trio of matches in the first stretch of a five game road trip. First on the agenda was a match up with the 2-3 Florida Atlantic Owls.

In Saturday's opening match against FAU, the doubles pairing of Senior Elinor Beazley and Freshman Daryna Shoshyna opened up the match hot. The duo quickly dispatched the opposition on court three with a 6-2 victory giving the Lumberjacks a leg up.

However Florida Atlantic's teams secured the doubles points with 6-4 and 6-3 victories on court one and two respectively meaning the Lumberjacks would have to battle back in the singles portion of the match.

In a hard fought series of matches the Lumberjacks and Owls went back and forth on all six courts. Junior Sofia Markova put together an impressive performance on court one, sweeping her opponent 6-2, 6-3. Meanwhile on court three, Beazley kept up her winning ways, fighting for a 6-4 victory in set one, but left nothing to doubt in a 6-0 set two.

Courts two, four and five all featured tough matchups between the two teams. Junior Ana Karen Guardiana Campos fell 6-0 in the first set, but proved difficult to put away in the second. The Western Michigan transfer would fall, but only after a tough 6-4 second set. On court four, Junior Ava Neyestani lost consecutive sets 6-4, while Freshman Patrycja Niewiadomska also went down swinging 6-4, 6-2.

Sophomore Laura Duhl took set one with ease 6-0 against Victoria Gomez O'Hayon. However set two would prove difficult as the two players couldn't get a leg up on one another. Ultimately Duhl fell in a tiebreaker, leaving the two players tied 1-1. As the match was already decided, the tie breaker was not played.

NAU will face both Arizona and Fresno State on Saturday February 4. The Lumberjacks will begin with Fresno State before facing the Wildcats. Following the packed weekend the Lumberjacks will have some well deserved time off before finishing the road trip against UTEP one February 18 and New Mexico State on February 19.
