No. 1 NAU Defeats Sacramento State to Return to Conference Finals

PHOENIX, Ariz. (April 28, 2023) – The Northern Arizona University women's tennis team is headed to the Big Sky conference finals following their victory over Sacramento State.
 
Despite initially losing the doubles point, NAU bounced back to win the match 4-3. The 'Jacks battled hard, but eventually lost on courts one and three to fall behind 0-1.
 
Daryna Shoshyna was the first Lumberjack to finish her match in singles play, easily defeating her opponent 6-3, 6-1.
 
Ana Karen Guadiana Campos finished next, putting up a strong effort before falling in consecutive 3-6 sets on court two.
 
Laura Duhl had an impressive match on court six, starting off with a decisive 6-3 first set win. Duhl never trailed in the second set, earning NAU another point after winning her second set 6-4.
 
Ava Neyestani fought hard on court five, pushing her first set to a tiebreak before narrowly losing 6-7. Despite a big effort in the second set, Neyestani eventually lost 1-6.
 
Sofia Markova started her day with a 1-6 loss in the first set before fighting her way to a 6-4 victory in the second. A back-and-forth third set led to a tiebreak with Markova emerging victorious with a 7-6 win on court one.
 
All eyes were on court three as Patrycja Niewiadomska fought to send NAU back to the conference finals. Niewidomska dropped her first set 3-6 before battling back to a second set 6-3 win. The third set proved to be a close competition, with neither player giving up. The set eventually went to a tiebreak where Niewiadomska earned a 7-6 win to clinch the match for the Lumberjacks.
 
NAU will face No. 2 Weber State tomorrow in a rematch of last year's conference final. The 'Jacks defeated the Wildcats 4-1 last year to win their third consecutive conference title. This season, NAU saw a 4-3 victory over Weber State en route to earning a perfect conference record.
