FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (January 12, 2023) – Three NAU school records fell during the first home meet of the season, with the Northern Arizona University track & field teams seeing a promising start to their 2024 indoor campaign.
Garret Bernt opened the day with a school and conference record on his first throw of the season. His mark of 21.51 meters in the weight throw set a new record and earned him second place in the event.
Desmond Lott finished in third place with a mark of 19.79 meters, while
Parker Bays placed fifth in the event with a throw of 18.21 meters.
Madeline Wilson dominated the 200-meter, breaking the school and conference record with a time of 23.59. Her time easily earned her the event win, finishing nearly a second before the second-place finisher.
Hannah Schmidt earned a top-10 finish after running a time of 25.79 to place ninth. Wilson also competed in the 60-meter, placing third after running a time of 7.40.
Mitchell Effing broke his own school record in the triple jump, jumping 16.02 meters to take the event win.
The NAU men dominated in the mile run, placing nine runners in the top-10.
Colin Sahlman took the event win with a time of 4:10.27 while
Theo Quax was not far behind in second with a time of 4:10.83.
Kang Nyoak and
Brodey Hasty finished third and fourth, respectively, with times of 4:12.75 and 4:14.86.
Erik Le Roux ran a time of 4:5.40 to place fifth and freshman
Zack Munson placed sixth with a time of 4:17.56.
Aidan Puffer and
Ford Washburn placed seventh and eighth, with Puffer running a time of 4:19.18 and Washburn running a time of 4:19.90.
Riley Human was the remaining NAU finisher, placing 10
th with a time of 4:27.20.
It was another Lumberjack sweep in the women's mile, with NAU runners occupying the top three spots.
Meagan Van Pelt took easily first with a time of 5:09.47. Freshman Ava Mitchel finished second with a time of 5:12.33, while
Anna Fenske placed third with a time of 5:20.05.
The men's 200-meter saw four top-10 finishers for the 'Jacks.
Trenton Givens led the way with a fifth-place finish and a time of 21.95.
Tyson Givens was close behind in sixth with a personal best time of 22.07.
Kyle Smith placed eighth with a time of 22.11 and
MarcAnthony Sanchez earned a new PR with a time of 22.15 to place 10
th.
Trenton Givens also competed in the finals of the men's 60-meter hurdles, finishing fifth with a time of 8.00.
The 'Jacks saw a strong duo in the men's 400-meter, with
Joshua Anderson and
Colin Sahlman placing fourth and sixth respectively. Anderson ran a time of 48.69, while Sahlman ran a time of 49.38.
In the women's triple jump,
Brenna Rodriguez saw a solid performance with a mark of 12.61 meters which earned her a new PR and a second-place finish.
Ian Lipsey and
Malachi Marshall finished fifth and eighth in the men's long jump. Lipsey jumped 7.02 meters while Malachi saw a personal best mark of 6.85 meters.
The NAU relays had strong performances as they concluded the races for the night, with the men wining the 4x400-meter.
Tyson Givens,
MarcAnthony Sanchez,
Cannon Booker, and
Trenton Givens combined to run a time of 3:17.90 to take the event win. The women placed second in the 4x400-meter relay, with
Alaynah Reed,
Madeline Wilson,
Hannah Schmidt, and
Brenna Rodriguez combining to run a time of 3:56.53.
In the women's weight throw,
Sariyah Horne-Kemp took the event win with a mark of 17.84 meters.
Alaina Diggs was not far behind in third with a personal best throw of 17.43 meters.
The men's shot put saw a pair of top-10 finishes from
Parker Bays and
Desmond Lott. Bays placed sixth with a throw of 16.71 meters while Lott finished eighth with a mark of 16.32 meters.
The women's shot put closed out the meet on a high note, with two NAU athletes placing in the top-8.
Alaina Diggs finished fifth with a mark of 13.83 meters, while
Sariyah Horne-Kemp finished eighth with a mark of 12.58 meters.
