FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (January 26, 2024) – Aquatic and Tennis Complex records fell Friday afternoon as the Northern Arizona Swimming and Diving team returned to Wall Aquatic Center as they hosted Utah Tech. The Lumberjacks took down the Trailblazers by a score of 74-30. NAU shattered two records and had a near miss of breaking another record. Before the meet, the Lumberjacks honored the 2024 senior class.
"We had some great races and our swimmers are swimming faster than they did at the conference meet last year," head coach
Andy Johns said. "We are excited about today and have a lot of confidence moving forward."
The Lumberjacks kicked off senior day with the 200-yard medley relay team of
Sophie Velitchkov,
Delaney Phillips,
Caylah Jago and
Annie Carlton setting a pool record. The senior Lumberjack team came in with a time of 1:41.08 breaking the previous pool record set by Arizona on Oct. 8, 2016, who had the previous record of 1:41.46.
Senior
Maddy Rey would then break the pool record in the 200-yard butterfly, clocking in with a time of 2:00.63. The previous record was held by NAU's Alina Staffeldt, which was set on Jan. 27, 2018, with a time 2:02.91.
Senior
Annie Carlton would come in first in the 200-yard backstroke with a time 2:00.24. Junior
Jamie Dellwardt would follow in second place with a time of 2:02.24 and freshmen
Meropi Eggink placed third with a time of 2:03.44.
The 200-yard breaststroke was held as an exhibition event.
Cydnie Perkins would come in with a time of 2:18.40 and
Delaney Phillips would follow for the Lumberjacks clocking in with a time of 2:19.91.
In the 100-yard individual medley,
Elsa Musselman would place first coming in with a time of 56.19 seconds.
To close things out,
Annie Carlton,
Maddy Rey,
Sophie Velitchkov and
Bena Koehn would come in first in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The Lumberjack-A team missed breaking the pool record by six-one hundredths of a second with a time of 3:24.30 seconds.
Diving would showcase exhibition dives throughout the meet. The Lumberjacks will be back in action tomorrow at 11 a.m. Mountain Standard Time at Wall Aquatic Center against Utah Tech to close out the two-day meet.
