PHARR, Texas (February 29, 2024) — Action continued at the WAC Championships for the Northern Arizona Swimming and Diving team on Thursday. The 'Jacks sit at the top of the leaderboard with 379 points after the second day of competition.
"Today was another good day in the pool and on the boards," head coach
Andy Johns said. "Our divers are amazing. Tomorrow is a critical day, especially in prelims to secure scoring opportunities for finals."
The evening session opened with
Elsa Musselman,
Sophie Velitchkov,
Bena Koehn,
Annie Carlton grabbing the bronze in the 200-yard freestyle relay clocking in with a time of 1:31.97.
Maddy Rey grabbed the gold in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:46.60. Rey earned the bronze medal last year in the event, earned gold her sophomore year and bronze again her freshman year in the 500 free.
Casey Craffey, who won the event last year, followed in second with a time 4:49.25 and
Helena Robla-Alvarez came in seventh place with a time 4:54.99 to close out the A-Final for NAU.
In the B-Final of the 500-yard freestyle,
Bena Koehn came in ninth place with a time of 4:55.00 and
Meropi Eggink followed in tenth place clocking with a time of 4:55.03.
Francesca Criscione grabbed the last spot in the heat, coming in with a time of 5:00.35. Criscione would compete against her sister, Vivi Criscione from Grand Canyon in the event.
In the 200-yard IM,
Elsa Musselman came in fourth place with a time of 2:00.68. In the prelims, Musselman set a school record in the event with clocking in at 1:59.96. The old record was set by Hayley Mayhew, who had a time of 2:00.04, also set the record at the Pharr Natatorium.
Cydnie Perkins closed out the A-Final in eighth place with a time of 2:05.73. In the B-Final,
Jamie Dellwardt came in 14th place with a time of 2:05.15. To close things out in the C-Final,
Abigail Tashlein came in 21st place clocking in at 2:06.38 and
Delaney Phillips followed in 22nd place with a time of 2:07.03.
To close out swimming events,
Sophie Velitchkov came in 11th place of the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 23.63 in the B-Final.
On the diving side of things, the 'Jacks swept the podium in the 3-meter event.
Grace Wesche grabbed the gold earning 320.10 points.
Mackenna Stocker scored 306.30 points for silver and
Margaret Wesche followed with the bronze with 306.25 points.
Maegan Jensen came in fourth place with 304.60 points and
Victoria Knapp came in fifth place, with 304.05 points.
Reaney Preston closed things out for NAU, coming in seventh place, earning 287.10 points.
Swimming will begin at 9:30 a.m MST and exhibition diving events will begin at 11:30 a.m. MST on Friday. Finals will begin at 5 p.m. MST. Action will take place at the Pharr Natatorium and will be streamed on ESPN+ and on WAC International TV.
