FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (April 9, 2024) – The NAU women's tennis team (5-13, 2-5) was defeated by No. 43 Arizona 5-2.
"We had our chances," said head coach
Ewa Bogusz. "We were able to secure the doubles point and we finally played the right way, which paid off. In singles they came out strong, and then adjusted at the end of the first set and took off in the second set. I do feel like we gave ourselves chances today."
The Lumberjacks got off to a strong start in doubles play, winning on courts one and three to earn the first point of the day.
Daryna Shoshyna and
Dolavee Tumthong were dominant on court one for NAU, getting out to a quick 5-0 lead before taking the match 6-3.
On court two
Patrycja Niewiadomska and
Andrea Noguera fell down 2-0 early, bouncing back to tie the match 3-3. After a back-and-forth match, Niewiadomska and Noguera dropped their match in a 7-5 tiebreaker.
Ana Karen Guadiana Campos and
Ava Neyestani saw tough competition on court three, with the score tied 6-6 late in the match. In a close tiebreaker Campos and Neyestani eventually won 8-6 to clinch the double point.
Ava Neyestani dominated on court five for the 'Jacks, getting out to a quick 4-1 lead in the first set before winning 6-1. Neyestani continued this into the second set, seeing a 4-1 lead before earning NAU's second point of the day with a 6-1 victory.
On court four,
Daryna Shoshyna got out to a 3-2 lead in the first set before dropping it 6-4. Despite putting up a good effort, Shoshyna fell 6-0 in the second set.
Andrea Nuguera fought hard on court six for NAU, dropping her first set 6-3. After falling down 3-0 in the second set, the match was abandoned with Arizona taking the point.
Patrycja Niewiadomska saw a tough match on court one, falling down 3-1 early in set one before dropping the set 6-2. After going down 5-1 early in set two, Niewiadomska fell 6-2.
Ana Karen Guadiana Campos fell down 4-1 early on court two, dropping the first set 6-1. Despite keeping the second set close early, Campos eventually fell 6-2.
Dolavee Tumthong dropped the first set on court three 6-3. Tumthong bounced back in the second set, pushing it to a tiebreaker and winning 7-5. Despite going up 6-4 early in a third set tiebreak, Tumthong was defeated 10-7.
