FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (September 24, 2024) - The Northern Arizona women's tennis team showed signs of success to begin the fall slate, as the Lumberjacks won every bracket in the Lumberjack Classic.
NAU was one of the four teams that participated in the classic. Alongside them were UNLV, Grand Canyon, and New Mexico.
The doubles bracket was won by the NAU pairing of junior
Daryna Shoshyna and freshman
Elen Jantacova. On their way to winning the bracket, they had three matches where they defeated players from all three schools. In the championship match, Shoshyna and Jantacova earned a victory over freshman Maria Sodre and junior Rebekkah Gaines from New Mexico, 6-4.
The Lumberjack Classic was Jantacova's first taste of collegiate tennis, finding quick success. Jantacova won in singles as well, taking the gold bracket, and winning in the championship over UNLV's freshman Kaho Oyama, 3-6, 7-5, 6-0.
Junior
Patrycja Niewiadomska won the blue bracket, only giving up one set the whole tournament. She lost the one set to New Mexico senior Maud Vandeputte but won the match in a thrilling three-set victory by the score of 6-2, 5-7, 7-6.
In the championship of the blue bracket, Niewiadomska faced Grand Canyon sophomore Gala Arangi. Newidomska would win this match in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5.
Freshman
Leontina Stojanovic went undefeated in the round robin going 2-0. In her first match, she took on senior Valentina Del Marco from Grand Canyon and came away with a 6-3, 6-1 win. The next day Stojanovic beat New Mexico redshirt senior Allison Romero, 6-2, 7-5.
Lumberjack sophomore,
Andrea Noguera, got her first win of the fall season when she took down Del Marco in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3.
Senior
Laura Duhl came away with third place in the blue draw. In the third-place match, she faced off against Vandeputte. Duhl came out on top, taking third with a 6-4, 6-3 scoreline.
