Swimming and Diving Open 2024 Season with Pentathlon

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (Sept. 26, 2024) - The Northern Arizona women's swimming and diving team will open its 42nd season with the 29th annual pentathlon on Sept. 27.

This includes five events consisting of the 100m butterfly, 100m backstroke, 100m breaststroke, 100m freestyle and the 200m individual medley. Points are calculated based on the times the swimmers post in each event, with the most cumulative points determining the winner.

Last year, Elsa Musselman recorded 4,120 points across the five different events to take the 2023 NAU Swimming and Diving Pentathlon in Wall Aquatic Center.  It was the first time in the last three years that a non-freshman had taken the title in the event. Gracie Munk posted 3,610 points in the 2022 season's event and Ashley Lawrence put up 3,520 back in 2021.

The pentathlon event is a useful way to get the team prepared for the five-month-long season approaching. Head coach Andy Johns will get the opportunity to see where the team stands and along with assistant swimming coach Larry Leibowitz, can make the necessary adjustments to ensure the 'Jacks are fully ready for the season.

The Pentathlon will begin at 2 p.m. Mountain Standard time in the Wall Aquatic Center. As per tradition, the team will divide into two and compete against each other in the annual Blue vs Gold event, which takes place on Oct. 11. The Lumberjacks first official meet will take place on Oct. 12 at Arizona State.
