TUCSON, Ariz. (January 19, 2025) – NAU came up just short of taking down the Cal Poly Mustangs, losing 4-3 to start the 2025 campaign on Sunday.
NAU lost the doubles point by losing two of the three doubles matches. The No. 2 doubles pair of Patrycja Newidomska and
Laura Duhl lost to Amy Leather and Sarah MacCallum, 6-3. The No. 3 duo of
Andrea Noguera and
Leontina Stojanovic lost to Jessica MacCallum and Natalie Lynch by a scoreline of 6-2.
No. 1 Doubles was unfinished, the Lumberjack pair of
Daryna Shoshyna and
Elen Jantacova was on top of Cal Poly at 5-4 in the set.
In the singles part of the match, NAU fell in half of the matches losing at the one, four and six position. Newidomska lost to Kennedy Buntrock at the No. 1 position by the score of 7-6(4), 6-1.
At the No. 4 spot, Jantacova went down to Alexandra Ozerets in two extremely close sets, 7-6(4), 7-6(2).
The last Lumberjack to go down was
Ruslana Kovalenko when she lost, 7-6, 6-3 to Sarah MacCallum.
NAU was able to pull out three wins in singles at the courts two, three, and five.
Shoshyna came away with a 6-4, 6-0 victory at her No. 2 spot. She is the only Lumberjack to get a bagel in this match against the Mustangs.
Duhl was playing the No. 2 position and won her match in three sets, beating Jessica MacCallum, 5-7, 6-2, 6-1.
Noguera got a three-set win as well, taking down her opponent at the No. 5 spot, 6-4, 6(2)-7, 6-3.
The Lumberjacks will be looking to bounce back tomorrow when they stay in Tucson to take on the Arizona Wildcats.
