TUCSON, Ariz. (January 20, 2024) – NAU suffered a 5-2 defeat at the hands of the Arizona Wildcats.
The Lumberjacks were unable to get the doubles point, losing two of the three doubles matches. NAU No. 1 doubles pair of
Elen Jantacova and
Daryna Shoshyna lost 6-1 to the Arizona duo of Midori Castillo-Meza and Martyna Ostrzygalo.
The Wildcats claimed the doubles point after Belen Nevenhoven and Danielle Tuhten beat Lumberjacks
Andrea Noguera and
Ruslana Kovalenko, 6-1. The No. 2 doubles match was closely contested, but unfinished. NAU pair of
Laura Duhl and
Patrycja Niewiadomska were down, 5-4.
Singles started strong with Shoshyna handing Ostrzygalo two breadsticks to her opponent at the No. 2 position, winning by the scoreline of 6-1, 6-1. Shoshyna picked up a pair of wins in Tucson to start her season at 2-0 in singles.
Shoshyna was the one of the two Lumberjacks to win a singles match.
Leontina Stojanovic went the distance in her match but would come short of winning.
On court six, she would bounce back in the second set after being bagled in the first set but could not pull out the win in the third set, losing to Zoya Chulak, 6-0, 3-6, 6-1.
NAU No.1, Niewiadomska had a close straight set loss, going down to Castillo-Meza, 7-5, 6-3.
Duhl had a competitive singles batch with the first set going into a tiebreak. Duhl came up just short and could not grab a win, losing to Teja Tirunelveli, 7-6(6), 6-3.
Jantacova lost her match at the No. 4 spot to Tanvi Narendran, 6-4, 6-2.
The Lumberjacks finished the matchup against Arizona with a singles win. Noguera won the final singles match of the day, snatching the third set from Stephanie Shogreen, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4
In the NAU's next match, they will be in Flagstaff to play their first home match of the season. The Lumberjacks will take on the California State Fullerton Titans on Jan. 31.
