Lumberjacks Sweep Montana State in Singles to Win 6-1

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (March 7, 2025) – The NAU Women's Tennis team took down the Montana State Bobcats, 6-1, winning all the singles matches after losing the doubles point.

The Lumberjacks lost the doubles point, after falling short on all three matches. The first match in doubles to finish was on court two when the doubles pair of Elen Jantacova and Daryna Shoshyna lost 6-3 to Montana State duo of Marta Garcia-Reboredo and Hudson Hawkins. Moments later, the Bobcats secured the doubles point when they got the win on court one, 7-5. Even though Montana State had already won the doubles point, they finished out the match on court three, which saw Lumberjacks Andrea Noguera and Leontina Stojanovic come up short to Angel Bean and Nia Gelashvili, 6-4.
 
In the singles portion of the match,  NAU had strong performances all around by winning all six of the singles points. Stojanovic was the first Lumberjack to finish a singles match when she won, by a break in the first set and two breaks in the second set. Stojanovic won the match by the score line of 6-4, 6-3. She also tied the overall match score at 1-1 with the Bobcats.
 
Jantacova came away with a smooth victory at the No. 5 position, winning by the scoreline of 6-2, 6-3. This is Jantacova now has her sixth singles win on the season with 3 of them being at the No. 5 spot.
 
Patrycja Niewiadomska gave NAU their third point of the day when she won her singles match on court two, 6-2, 7-5. The first set went by fast as Niewiadomska dominated her opponent. The second set had much more rallies and the rallies lasted longer. Neiwiadomska prevailed in the match to pick up her sixth win of the season.
 
Noguera bounced back from her singles loss to New Mexico with a straight set victory, 6-4, 6-4 to clinch the overall match win for the Lumberjacks. In this match, Noguera had the mental edge as she was able to win the pressure points at deuce. Noguera now has a 8-1 record when it comes to singles this season. 
 
Laura Duhl had a battle with her opponent as she prevailed to win the match, 7-6(5), 6-2. The first set was very back and forth which saw Duhl win that set by just one point in a tiebreaker. Duhl hit the gas on the second set, winning in about 30 minutes. Duhl is now 4-1 thai season when she plays at the No. 3 position.
 
Shoshyna bounced back in her match, winning in a third set tiebreaker, 5-7, 6-0, 10-7 at the No. 1 position. Shoshyna improved her singles record to 8-1 and picked up second win at No. 1.
 
The win boosted the Lumberjacks record to 6-3 and improved their home winning streak to five. The team is also undefeated in Big Sky play at 2-0.
