FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (April 3, 2025) – The NAU Women's Tennis team will take on the Sacramento State Hornets on April 5 in Flagstaff. This is a battle between the No. 1 team in the Big Sky, NAU, and No. 2 Sacramento State. Both teams are currently undefeated in conference play.
The Lumberjacks are coming off a 7-0 sweep against the Montana Grizzlies. 5 of the six singles matches were won in straight sets with
Patrycja Niewiadomska needing a third set 10-point tiebreak, which she dominated only dropping one point. The win over the Grizzlies moved their winning streak to 9. If NAU wins against Sacramento State, they would push the winning streak into double digits.
The Hornets are currently 15-2 overall with their last win coming against the No. 67 Long Beach State Beach, 4-3. Sacramento state has an overall record of 15-2 with their two losses being against the Nevada Wolfpack and the Cal Poly Mustangs.
Some notable players from the Hornets are Maddy Ferros and Irene Riva. Ferros plays the No. 1 spot and has an 11-4 record at that position as she is currently riding a seven-match winning streak. Riva is undefeated in singles with a 10-0 record with eight wins coming from the No. 6 position, and two at the No. 5 spot in the lineup.
Looking at the history between these schools, Sacramento State has the advantage by winning 11 of the 19 meetings all time. The Lumberjacks will also be seeking revenge as the Hornets did them out of the Big Sky Tournament last season. This was a match that came down to the wire with NAU losing 3-4 in the match.
Daryna Shoshyna is the only current Lumberjack that pulled out a singles win in that match as she won, 6-1, 4-6, 6-2.
This high-stakes match will be played here in Flagstaff at the Wall Aquatic and Tennis Complex on Saturday, April 5 at 10 a.m. The match is free for the public to attend. To stay up to date with NAU Women's Tennis, follow the Jacks on X, Instagram, and Facebook.
