FARMINGTON, Utah (September 15, 2025) – For the second time in his career,
Ty Pennington garnered Big Sky Offensive Player of the Week honors following the Northern Arizona football team's 52-49 victory at Southern Utah on Saturday.
Pennington was honored by the league office alongside Northern Colorado's Hudson Voggesser, who was named the Big Sky Defensive Player of the Week. Weber State's Sloan Calder and Montana's Ty Morrison were Big Sky Co-Special Teams Players of the Week.
Pennington guided the Lumberjacks to a thrilling win in Cedar City, which retained the Grand Canyon Trophy in NAU's favor as a result. Pennington completed 20-of-31 passes and set new career-highs in passing yards (366) and passing touchdowns (3). He also added a rushing touchdown, marking his third game as a Lumberjack with four total touchdowns accounted for.
The junior from Sand Springs, Okla. engineered NAU's game-winning drive with the Lumberjacks trailing the Thunderbirds, 49-42, late in the fourth quarter. After
Seth Cromwell's rushing touchdown brought the 'Jacks within a point, Pennington connected with
Jayson Raines for the go-ahead two-point conversion.
With two touchdown tosses to
Kolbe Katsis and another to
Jeter Purdy, Pennington became the first Lumberjack quarterback to throw for three touchdowns in a game since RJ Martinez in November 2022.
Pennington currently leads the Big Sky in total offense (282.3), passing yards (799), passing touchdowns (5), points responsible for (44) and points responsible per game (14.7). He ranks in the top 20 nationally in all five categories, including in the top 10 in total offense and passing yards.
The Grand Canyon Trophy rivalry victory moved the 'Jacks up to No. 17 in the Stats Perform FCS Top 25. NAU remained at No. 19 in the AFCA FCS Coaches Poll.
Pennington will lead No. 17/19 NAU into a battle between top 20 teams at Findlay Toyota Field at the Walkup Skydome on Saturday when No. 19/14 UIW visits Flagstaff. The Family Weekend kickoff is slated for 2 p.m.
