FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (August 3, 2026) – Northern Arizona football garnered a preseason top 25 ranking for the second consecutive season, beginning the 2026 season ranked No. 25 in the Stats Perform FCS Preseason Top 25.
The Lumberjacks are nationally-ranked for the second straight year heading into the season. Prior to the 2025 season, the Lumberjacks last earned a spot in the Stats Perform FCS Preseason Top 25 in 2016.
Reigning FCS National Champion Montana State was the unanimous No. 1 team, receiving all 57 first-place votes. Montana is right behind at No. 2 with UC Davis coming in at No. 6. NAU is the fourth Big Sky team in the top 25, while Idaho State and Southern Utah received votes on two or more ballots.
NAU, led by head coach
Brian Wright entering his third season in Flagstaff, has eyes on returning to the FCS Playoffs after missing out in 2025. Although the postseason eluded the Lumberjacks, they still posted their second consecutive winning season, finishing with a 7-5 overall record.
Of the five other conference teams listed on two or more preseason ballots, NAU will face three of them on the road this season during conference play with games at Montana State (Sept. 26; ESPN2), Idaho State (Oct. 3) and Southern Utah (Oct. 31). In the middle of this stretch includes a home game against Montana on Oct. 10.
