SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (September 18, 2026) - The Northern Arizona women's volleyball team was swept in three sets by the San Francisco Dons on Friday night, falling 31-29, 25-20, 25-22.
The Lumberjacks fall to 6-5Â (0-0 Big Sky) for the season, while the Dons improve to 7-5Â (0-0 West Coast Conference).
NAU was led offensively by Quincey Coyle, who recorded a team-high 12 kills, while Hanah Stoddard and Gigi Greenlee each added six kills. Coyle, Ella Hosfeld, and Peyton Devlin each contributed one service ace. At the net, Greenlee led the team with five blocks, followed by Avery Gottschalk with three and Coyle with two. Taryn Davis paced the offense with 14 assists, while Hosfeld added 12. Defensively, Kate Federico led NAU with 17 digs, followed by Coyle with eight and Davis with seven.
The Lumberjacks stayed within striking distance throughout the opening set, using kills from Stoddard, Gottschalk, Coyle, and Federico to keep pace with the Dons. USF made a 10-1 run in the middle of the set to take an 18-11 lead. After trailing 22-17, NAU responded with a 7-2 run to tie the set at 24-24. NAU and San Francisco traded points deep into extra points, with the Lumberjacks taking a 28-27 lead before the Dons answered to even the score. NAU again tied the set at 29-29, but San Francisco closed out the set with two consecutive points to take the 31-29 victory.
NAU continued to battle in the second set as the Lumberjacks kept the set close early, with Federico recording an ace during a stretch that helped the 'Jacks even the score at 10-10. From there, the Dons used a 5-0 run to take a 15-10 advantage. Coyle and Gottschalk helped NAU stay within striking distance, with Coyle adding a late service ace to bring the Lumberjacks within 23-19. San Francisco closed out the frame with the final two points, as USF pulled away late for a 25-20 win and a 2-0 match lead. NAU improved offensively, hitting .241 in the second set and showing a more efficient offensive effort in the frame.
A strong start and several momentum swings kept NAU within reach in the third set, but San Francisco ultimately secured a 25-22 win to complete the sweep. The Lumberjacks came out with early energy, taking the first point behind a Devlin service ace before battling back from a 9-6 deficit to make a 7-2 run and regain the lead. Devlin had three consecutive kills, while key kills from Wilson and Gottschalk helped fuel NAU's offense during the stretch. Hosfeld added a service ace as the Lumberjacks took a 13-11 lead. San Francisco responded with a 6-0 run to regain control, but NAU continued to fight, using blocks from Gottschalk and Coyle to cut the deficit to 17-16. The Lumberjacks stayed within striking distance late, pulling to 24-22, but the Dons closed out the set on the next point.
The 'Jacks will close play at the USF Challenge tomorrow at 9 a.m. MST when they face Texas Southern. The match will not be streamed, but live stats can be found via StatBroadcast. It will be the Lumberjacks' final tune-up before Big Sky Conference play begins on Sept. 24.
