FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (October 11, 2018) – Northern Arizona Men's Tennis team will be sending six of its players to the ITA Mountain Regionals from Sunday, Oct. 14 to Friday, Oct. 19. The Mountain Regionals will take place in Las Vegas, Nevada. The six Lumberjacks consist of
Tim Handel,
Thomas Fisher,
Lucas Taylor,
Ruben Montano,
Facundo Tumosa and
Ron Idzon.
"Regional championships are always a good indicator to see where we are in comparison to the teams from our region and conference," NAU head coach
Maciej Bogusz said. "Our team has been showing improvement in practice, and I am excited to see how well we will transition everything we have worked on to the match situations."
Through the previous two tournaments of the fall, NAU has been able to have some notable wins and performances. In the ITA Men's All-American Championships the Lumberjacks had Taylor go 3-1 in singles. Handel got a win over the 79
th ranked singles player in the country Matias Soto of Baylor. Finally, the duo of Handel and Montano took down the 35
th ranked duo pair of Kareem Allaf and Jonas Larsen of Iowa.
In 2017, the Lumberjacks found success at this event in both singles and doubles. In singles, Handel was able to go 4-1, where he eventually fell in the quarterfinals. While Fisher, went 3-2 and both Taylor and Montano picked up two wins. In doubles Handel and Montano were able to win the entire tournament, posting a 5-0 record throughout the week.
Following last season both Handel and Taylor were ranked in the top 20 in singles in the Mountain Region. Handel was eighth while Taylor was sixteenth.
