Women’s Tennis Returns to Vegas for ITA Mountain Regional Championships

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (October 8, 2018) – The Northern Arizona women's tennis team will be put to the test starting Wednesday at the ITA Mountain Regional Championships. The regional tournament, held at the Fertitta Tennis Complex in Las Vegas, will run from Wednesday through Sunday.

The Lumberjacks will send all eight players to Las Vegas as they will compete to see where they stand amongst their Mountain Region competitors.

"We're bringing the entire team back to Vegas and we're excited because most of them had a good two weeks of practice to work on some things from the last tournament," said head coach Ewa Bogusz. "We've seen improvements on the court and in their mindsets, so we're hoping to see that this week."

For the majority of the team, the ITA Mountain Regional Championships will mark their first competitions in more than two weeks since the UNLV Fall Invitational.

Senior Hanneke Lodewijks and junior Chiara Tomasetti were the lone 'Jacks to compete in the interim, as the pair is recently coming off an appearance at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships. The duo lost a pair of tough doubles matches, while Tomasetti split her two singles matches.

Tomasetti leads NAU this fall with eight singles wins, including two over nationally-ranked opponents from UNLV and Florida State. Freshman Emilie Haakansson is right behind with a 7-1 singles record. Both Tomasetti and Haakansson both won singles titles in their respective flights at the UNLV invite – also held at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.

Sophomores Madi Moore and Cora-Lynn von Dungern and freshman Adrianna Sosnowska all have posted winning singles record through the team's first two invites. The trio each has five wins to their name.

Sosnowska and Tomasetti has been NAU's most successful doubles team in terms of wins, coming out on top in four of five matches together. Tomasetti and Lodewijks have teamed up for three wins as a duo, pushing Tomasetti's team-lead to seven doubles wins. Both Sosnowska and von Dungern have won six doubles matches each overall.

As a team, the Lumberjacks finished last season ranked No. 8 in the Mountain Region rankings. Tomasetti and Lodewijks wrapped up the spring 2018 season ranked No. 10 and No. 19 respectively in singles, while Lodewijks and sophomore Ellie Millard was ranked No. 6 in doubles in the final regional rankings released by the ITA at the conclusion of the spring.

Both singles and doubles will be played on Wednesday as the tournament gets started in Las Vegas.
