PORTLAND, Ore. — Northern Arizona men's tennis picked up its first Big Sky Conference win, second of the season against the Portland State Vikings with a final score of 6-1 on Friday, Feb. 23.
The Lumberjacks increase to 2-4 on the season with their first win recorded against the New Mexico Lobos.
"We fought well today," Director of Tennis
Ki Kroll said. "We had a good start in doubles."
Northern Arizona started off strong with
Thomas Fisher and
Felix Schumann picking up the first doubles win 6-2 over Portland State's Sam Roberts and Majeed Bukhari.
Before clinching, the 'Jacks fell at the No. 2 position;
Tim Handel and
Ruben Montano then finished it off with a 7-6 (4) clinch.
In singles, the Lumberjacks took the next three points, clinching the victory 4-0 before finishing out the remainder. NAU's
Lucas Taylor, Schumann, Fisher, Handel and Montano bested their Viking opponents to finish the match 6-1.
"Portland was a tough team, but we maintained good energy and worked hard. It's a good start for the Big Sky Conference," said Kroll.
The 'Jacks will remain on the road to compete against the University of Oregon Ducks tomorrow, Feb. 24 at 10 a.m.
