POCATELLO, Idaho — The Northern Arizona men's tennis team started its road trip with a 6-1 win against Idaho State Saturday morning.
The Bengals had a good start, leading on every court and eventually clinching the doubles point with wins over
Thomas Fisher and
Sebastian Eguez 6-3 at the No. 1 position and
Felix Schumann and
Ruben Montano 6-4 at the No. 3 position.
Down 1-0 to Idaho State, the Lumberjacks went into singles with a dominating showing sweeping all six courts.
"We fought hard against a good Idaho State team," Director of Tennis
Ki Kroll said.
To start senior Schumann picked up a 6-4, 7-6(10-0) win to tie the score up 1-1 before Montano's 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 win put the Lumberjacks in the lead.
Lucas Taylor then went on to defeat ISU's Peter Trhac 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 before Fisher garnered a win-clinching match 6-4, 5-7, 7-6(9-0).
Northern Arizona continued to dominate with Eguez picking up a 6-3, 6-3 win at the No. 5 position and Steele finishing it off 6-4, 6-0 over Bengal opponent Austin Gwilliam.
"I'm proud of our guys' effort today," said Kroll. "Now it's time to prepare for tomorrow."
The Lumberjacks increase to 7-9 overall and 5-1 in the Big Sky after defeating Idaho State and will be back on the courts Sunday, April 1 in Utah. Northern Arizona will finish this road trip against Weber State at 10 a.m.
