STANFORD, Calif. - Jasmine Malone finished third overall in the women's 200-meter dash and both the men's and women's 4x100-meter relay teams had strong performances as the Northern Arizona University track and field program concluded the Stanford Invitational at Cobb Track and Angell Field on Saturday afternoon.
"I'm surprised with her starting point here," director of track and field Michael Smith said. "Going a couple weeks without a race and shutting down between seasons hasn't fazed her. What we saw at the end of indoors was the accumulation of successive weeks of racing and workouts to reach that place. If the same thing is about to happen outdoors, I don't know where we're going to be at the end of this thing because it going to be pretty special."
"To come out of the gates like this against world class athletes, she really held her own," Smith added. "I'm super excited for Jasmine and I think she's find herself in a pretty spectacular place in just a few weeks."
The women's 4x100 squad of Jada Jackson, Nicole Fotinos, Miracle Onyemaobi and Malone placed second at the invite with a time of 46.17 while the men's 4x100 unit of Lorenzo Johnson,Tyren Wolfe, Khalil Dorsey and Kossi Tchenawou came in third at 41.50.
"Both of those 4x100's have great potential this season," Smith said. "Both have opportunities to set school records and compete at the regional meet at a very high level. We're running what I think are very solid times for this early in the season with them still being sloppy. If you want to get excited about those 4x100's, we are where we're at right now but there's a lot to be cleaned up in those still."
The women's 4x400-meter relay team of Ashley Taylor, Malone, Onyemaobi and Jackson also had a strong showing and finished fourth with a time of 3:43.05.
Steven Hartshorn-West rounded out the NAU action with a 10th-place finish in the men's triple jump (13.02-meters).
The Lumberjacks will return to the track with Arizona State University's Sun Angel Classic on Friday, April 6 through Saturday, April 7 at Sun Angel Stadium.
"I think we've gotten some great competition this weekend," Smith concluded. "We're excited to head into this next block of training and we'll keep working from there."
