FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (April 6, 2026) – Distance stars Colin Sahlman and Hayley Burns earn Big Sky Men's and Women's Track Athletes of the Week honors.
Junior Hayley Burns broke new ground with a school-record 5,000 meters of 15:18.26 at the Stanford Invitational, capturing the Big Sky lead and ranking #2 nationally in the NCAA this season. Burns' 5,000m time is a Big Sky Conference all-time record, this record underscores NAU's tradition of producing elite distance athletes who compete at the highest level.
Senior Colin Sahlman opened the season with a 5,000-meter performance of 13:23.12 also at the Stanford Invitational, marking a personal best, the Big Sky season lead, #7 on NAU's all-time list, and #5 nationally in the NCAA this season. Sahlman's range is exceptional, highlighted by his 800-meter indoor collegiate record, showcasing his unique combination of speed and endurance. His effort continues a storied NAU distance legacy, where Lumberjack runners have consistently dominated conference and national competition.
Both Sahlman and Burns have unofficially secured spots in the first round of the NCAA Championships and will next race at the Bryan Clay Invitational at Azusa Pacific University.
