Johnson Earns Big Sky Athlete of the Week After Record-Breaking Performance in 400m Hurdles

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (March 30, 2026) — Northern Arizona's Josiah Johnson has been named Big Sky Men's Track Athlete of the Week following a historic performance in the 400-meter hurdles at the Carvel Jackson Memorial Track & Field Showcase on Saturday in Mesa.

Johnson delivered a breakout performance to open the outdoor season, running 49.56 in the 400-meter hurdles at Mesa Community College. The mark set a new NAU school record and currently ranks No. 1 in the NCAA and the United States, while sitting No. 9 in the world this season.

The performance marks a significant step forward for Johnson, positioning him as one of the premier 400-meter hurdlers in the country and a contender on the national stage as the outdoor season progresses.

"This race meant the world to me," Johnson said. "I've been waiting to jump into the 400 hurdles since last season, and to open up with 49.56 and No. 1 in the NCAA was completely unexpected. I just feel super blessed. All glory to God, and a big thanks to Coach Clark and my teammates."

Johnson is slated to compete again this week at the Triton Invitational, hosted by UC San Diego on April 3–4.
