FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — The Northern Arizona men's tennis team solidified the No. 2 seed in the Big Sky Conference championship tournament with its 7-0 shutout win against Sacramento State to end the first of two matches today.
"I think we are very excited, we knew this was going to be an important match to us," Director of Tennis Ki Kroll. "Especially getting a win on senior day; it means a lot to the guys."
The Lumberjacks honored four seniors in Harun Ajanovic, Sebastian Eguez, Felix Schumann and Adi Zilberstein as they competed in their last Big Sky regular season match of their respective careers.
Northern Arizona once again dominated in doubles leading on every court and clinching the point with a 6-1 win by Zilberstein and Lucas Taylor and a 6-2 win by Eguez and Ruben Montano.
The 'Jacks had the lead going into singles and maintained their performance throughout.
Taylor finished first defeating Sacramento's Kasparas Zemaitelis 6-1, 6-1 before Schumann finished his court with a 6-3, 6-3 win against Donald Hall. Montano then clinched the win at 4-0 defeating Hermont Legaspi 6-3, 6-1.
The Lumberjacks topped off the win with Eguez, Tim Handel and Thomas Fisher winning on their respective courts to put the score at 7-0, the 'Jacks fourth shutout of the season.
Northern Arizona will continue the doubleheader against Mesa Community College at 3 p.m. this afternoon.
"We're just trying to have some fun, we want to play hard," said Kroll. "We just keep getting more practice and hopefully we'll have another good match this afternoon."
