OTTAWA - Just graduated Northern Arizona University standout
Ashley Taylor is set to compete in the 800-meter at the 2018 Canadian Track and Field Championships that run July 3-8 at Terry Fox Stadium in Ottawa, Ontario.
Taylor takes to the track in one of three sections for the semifinals of the 800-meter event on Friday at 4:25 p.m. MST. The final is scheduled for Sunday at 8:45 a.m. MST.
"I'm very excited to compete at nationals this coming weekend," Taylor said. "The last time I raced at nationals I was a 400-meter hurdler and I made the junior Canadian team back in 2014. Now I am back four years later in a whole new event and a completely different outlook on myself as an athlete in this sport."
"I've had a lot to overcome as a woman and athlete but the growth and commitment got me to this point where I am right now as an 800-meter runner," Taylor added. "This is only the beginning of my running career and I cannot wait to go out there this weekend and show my country."
It is the second post-collegiate race for the former Lumberjack after she finished her time at NAU this spring. Taylor went off and recorded a new personal best of 2:02.99 to take the bronze medal at the Athletics Ontario Outdoor Track and Field Championships at York Lions Stadium on June 24.
The time would have set a new school record along with ranking second all-time by just .04 seconds in the Big Sky Conference if she was still running in a NAU uniform.
It is just her first year of running the 800-meter event. Taylor finished fourth at the NCAA Indoor Championships and followed it with a bronze at the recent NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, earning two First Team All-American honors in the process.
Taylor also joined former NAU great Andy Trouard in signing with Total Sports USA after graduation as she continues to advance towards her professional career.
