FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (August 11, 2018) – A pair of former Northern Arizona University track and field standouts had successful performances at the North America, Central America, Caribbean (NACAC) Senior Area Championships on Friday at Varsity Stadium in Toronto as Lopez Lomong placed first in the men's 10,000 meter event and Brooke Anderson finished third in the women's hammer throw.
Lomong won the 10,000m event finishing in 29:49.03. It was a tight race throughout as Lomong finished only 2.34 seconds ahead of second place finisher fellow USATF runner Elkanah Kibet.
Lomong has enjoyed continued success following his collegiate career at NAU as he represented the U.S. Olympic Team in the men's 1,500 meter at the 2008 Summer Olympics. He also won gold in the men's 5,000 meter at the 2015 NACAC Championships. Most recently, Lomong was victorious at the USATF Outdoor Championship in the 10,000 meter with a time of 28:58.38. He also won the 2018 Sir Walter Miler Event in Raleigh, North Carolina setting the event record finishing in 03:53.86
Brooke Anderson continued her success from her senior collegiate season, which saw her finish second nationally in the hammer throw at the 2018 NCAA Outdoor Track Championships. Anderson's best throw of 70.05 meters was good for third overall on Friday at the NACAC Senior Area Championships, which was just 1.91 meters short of second place finisher Jillian Weir from Canada.
