Northern Arizona’s Spring Season Begins on Saturday Against Portland

The Lumberjacks look to win Big Sky Championship in 2019

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (January 24, 2019) – The Northern Arizona Men's Tennis team will be kicking off its 2019 spring season on Saturday, Jan. 26 in Las Vegas, Nevada against the University of Portland.

The Lumberjacks were able to put together a solid fall season with one tournament victory and multiple deep runs. The NAU duo of Tim Handel and Ruben Montano were able to seal the one tournament victory in the ITA Mountain Regioanl that took place from Oct. 15-19 . In the championship match, the pair of Handel and Montano took down Julien Evrad and Kostya Nesterenko of the University of Nevada with a score of 7-5 and 6-4 to take home the championship.  In singles, Lucas Taylor was able to make the best run of the fall for Northern Arizona in the ITA Mountain Regionals as he made it to the semi-finals after winning three matches in the consolation bracket.

Matchup
 The University of Portland is currently 1-1 on the season.  The Pilots loss came against the University of Washington 1-6, where its lone win came against the Huskies from their number two singles player Sema Pankin, 6-3 and 7-5.

Portland's lone win of the season came from Portland State with a final score of 7-0.  The Pilots were able to take two of the six single matches in just two sets.

Northern Arizona will be back in action the following weekend on Feb. 2nd in Salt Lake City, Ut. against the University of Utah.
