NAU Men’s Tennis Wins Both Doubles Matches at ITA Mountain Regional Championships

DENVER, Colo. (October 16, 2019) – After the first day at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Mountain Regionals in Denver Colo., Northern Arizona University men's tennis won in both of their doubles matches and two of six singles matches.
 
Alexander Groves and Chris Steele beat Air Force Academy's Mack Galvin and Morgan Ihrig 8-7(2). Doubles pairing Eban Straker-Meads and Facundo Tumosa later beat Montana's Ludvig Hallgren and Edward Pudney 8-4.
 
Both doubles pairings will begin their second doubles match tomorrow morning. Groves and Steele will battle against Nevada's Daniel Dudockin and Julian Evrard while Tumosa and Straker-Meads play BYU's Sean Hill and Mateo Vereau.
 
In singles, Steele received a bye for his first match to later face Utah State University's C. Holmes. In the first set, Steele lost 6-2, but came back in the second winning 6-4. Steele challenged Holmes to a third set, ultimately falling to a score of 7-6(5).
 
Groves faced Idaho State's Lukas Ridemar, forcing a tough first set of 7-6(2), dropping his set to Ridmar. Groves faced a second set loss as well of 6-4.
 
Tumosa beat his Weber State opponent, Michiel Van Schoor, in three sets. The first set Tumosa went 6-3. However, in the second, Van Schoor came back and won 2-6. Tumosa turned the score back in his favor in the third, reigning a 6-1 win. In his second singles match against North Dakota's Andreja Petrovic, Tumosa fell in two sets of 6-2 and 6-3. 
 
Daniel Dillon took on Utah State's D. Buskamuka. The match went back and forth, entering into three sets. In the first, Dillon lost to Bushamuka 6-1. However, in the second, Dillon shutout Bushamuka 6-0. Bushamuka took over in the third set, owning a 6-2 win. 
 
Straker-Meads advanced the furthest in singles matches today for the Lumberjacks. He received a bye for his first match but cranked out a win over Weber State's Bo-Han Li. In the first set, Straker-Meads never let his opponent score, earning a 6-0 win. In the second, Straker-Meads won by two points with a 6-4 score. Straker-Meads will play for a semi-finals spot against Air Force's Galvin Mack tomorrow at 2 p.m. Those who lost their singles matches will begin in the consolation bracket tomorrow morning.
