Northern Arizona Travels to Louisiana to Compete in the Cajun Invite

The Lumberjacks will look for three wins on the weekend

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (February 13, 2019) – The Northern Arizona men's tennis team will be traveling to Lafayette, LA. to participate in the Cajun Invite.  The Cajun Invite will be hosted by the University of Louisiana and will be made up of Northern Arizona University, Texas A&M – Corpus Christi, Alcorn State University and the University of Louisiana.  The Cajun Invite will take place on Feb. 15 and Feb. 16.

"The weekend is going to be tough with three matches in a day and a half, but that's why we are taking eight guys," NAU head coach Maciej Bogusz said.  "Recovery will be key."

The Lumberjacks are coming off a weekend where they went 1-0, with a 4-3 victory over San Diego State University.  The win pushed NAU to a record of 2-2 on the season, with its other win against the University of Portland.

"The guys have been very excited after the last match, and it is good to see that everyone in practice is working on things to get better for last weekend," Bogusz said.  "It's good to see that the win hasn't affected us negatively, but instead we got the motivation that we are already playing pretty good, but we can still get better."

In the 4-3 victory over SDSU, the 'Jacks were able to win the doubles point, and three singles matches. In doubles, although NAU's No. 1 pair fell, the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles pairs were able to win.  The pair of Chris Steele and Tom Fisher picked up a win 6-3, while Northern Arizona's No. 3 duo's of Lucas Taylor and Facundo Tumosa won 6-4. The three singles winners for the 'Jacks were Tim Handel, Tumosa and Ruben Montano. Handel's win clinched the win for the Lumberjacks.

NAU's leader in singles wins through four matches is Handel, who has accumulated four wins, while NAU's leader in doubles is Handel and Montano and Fisher and Steele, who both have two wins.

Matchup
Texas A&M – Corpus Christi is currently 7-3 on the season, with wins over UTRGV, Prairie View A&M University, and Trinity University.  The Islanders are currently riding a two-match losing streak, as they fell to Rice and Elon this past weekend.
