Northern Arizona Goes 1-1 on the First Day of the Cajun Invite

The freshmen seal the win against Alcorn State

| Box Score 2 LAFYETTE, LA. (February 15, 2019) – The Northern Arizona men's tennis tem kicked off the Cajun invite with two matches on Feb. 15. The Lumberjacks went 1-1 on the day with a 4-0 win over Alcorn State and a 4-3 loss to Texas A&M – Corpus Christi.  After going 1-1, NAU moves to 3-3 on the season.

The Lumberjacks started the invite with a 4-3 loss to the Islanders. The Lumberjacks jumped out to a 1-0 against Corpus Christi, as they were able to take the doubles point.  The 'Jacks first duo to win their match was Chris Steele and Tom Fisher, who took down Francois Kellerman and Thibault Frumholz 7-6.  Northern Arizona was able to clinch the doubles point when Lucas Taylor and Facundo Tumosa were able to come back from being down 4-0, to win the match 7-6.

Although falling at the No. 6 singles, NAU was able to get back in the win category when Tim Handel and Steele were able to win their singles matches.  Handel won the No. 1 singles by a score of 6-3 and 7-5 over William Mottet of Corpus Christi, while Steele won by a score of 6-3 and 7-5 over Carlos Pedrosa Cuevas.

The match would eventually get tied at 3-3, but unfortunately, the Islanders won the No. 5 singles to take the win.

"It was a great college tennis match with two evenly matched teams going against each other," NAU head coach Maciej Bogusz said.  "The Momentum has been changing all the time, we were behind in doubles and were able to take the point after defending match points against us. Singes was close on most of the courts, and we came up just a few points short."

Northern Arizona was back in action at 4 p.m., where the team was able to take down Alcorn State 4-0.  The Lumberjacks were able to make quick work of the doubles point as the No.1, and No. 2 doubles pairs won for the 'Jacks.  The duo of Handel and Ruben Montano won 6-2 over Jonathon Parat and Stojan Stojanovski, while Taylor and Tumosa won 6-1 over Ivan Matas and Santiago Rocca from Alcorn State.

In singles, NAU's three wins came from three of its freshmen. Tumosa started off the Lumberjacks singles matches with a win at the No. 3 position with a score of 6-1 and 6-0.  Following Tumosa, Ron Idzon was able to pick up the first win of his NAU career, by a score of 6-1 and 6-0.  The clinching match for the Lumberjacks came from Daniel Dillon by a score of 6-1 and 6-1.  The clinching win also marked the first win of the season from Dillon.

"Not every time you get an opportunity to bounce right back after a 4-3 loss," Bogusz said.  "Our team was very motivated and took care of business early. We show more and more character every time we compete, and it is great to see."

Northern Arizona will be back in action in the Cajun Invite on Feb. 16, as it takes on the University of Louisiana.
