Northern Arizona Faces Off Against UNLV and Gonzaga

Handel looks to continue his success

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (February 20, 2019) – The Northern Arizona men's tennis team will be back on the road on Feb. 22 and Feb 23. as the team takes on UNLV and Gonzaga. This will mark the Lumberjacks eighth and ninth straight road match to start the 2019 season. NAU is currently 3-4 on the season and on a one-game losing streak.

"We recovered after last weekend and cleaned up a few things that we saw during our singles and doubles matches," NAU head coach Maciej Bogusz said. "I think we have had a very good week of practice and are ready for the matches to come."

This past weekend the 'Jacks went 1-2 in the Cajun Invite with a 4-0 win over Alcorn State, and losses to Texas A&M – Corpus Christi by a score of 4-3 and to Louisiana by a score of 4-0. In the invite, both Daniel Dillon and Ron Idzon were able to pick up their first win in singles as Lumberjacks, while as a pair they were both able to pick up their first doubles win at Northern Arizona.

Through seven matches, Tim Handel is the top Lumberjack in singles, with a record of 5-0, while Facundo Tumosa is second on the team in wins with three.

In doubles, the Lumberjacks top two doubles both have three wins apiece. One duo is made up of Ruben Montano and Handel while the other is made up of Lucas Taylor and Tumosa.
Matchups

UNLV is currently 6-1, while they are currently riding a one-game losing streak. Although the loss to Pepperdine, the Rebels did kick off their season with six straight wins.

UNLV's top singles player is Olle Thestrup, who holds a current record of 2-4on the season. The Rebel with the most singles wins are Clayton Alenik and Tom Ciszewski, with six each. Alenik is the No. 5 singles player for the team while Ciszewski is the No. 6 player.

Gonzaga is currently 4-1 on the season, after starting the year with four straight wins. The Bulldogs have wins over two Big Sky teams, Montana and Idaho State.

So far in the 2019 season, Gonzaga has had both Sam Feit and Ruadhan O'Sullivan play as its No. 1. The two have a combined 3-2 record at that spot.

"We are facing two very good teams, but we are focusing on ourselves as that is the only thing we can really control," Bogusz said. "If we put what we have been working on in practice in the matches that is all we are looking for."
