Northern Arizona Moves to 8-6 on the Season After 4-3 Win Over Denver

NAU’s hot start leads to victory

Box Score DENVER, Colo. (March 17, 2019) – The Northern Arizona men's tennis team won a 4-3 nail biter in Denver, Colo. against Denver. The win marks the eighth win of the season and moves the Lumberjacks to a record of 8-6 on the season. The win also pushes the 'Jacks winning streak to five matches, as the team hasn't lost since Feb. 25 against UNLV.

"I am so proud of the team's performance today," NAU head coach Maciej Bogusz said. "Everyone played extremely hard and we had chances to win all the matches. This is a very special group of young men and when they play together like today there is no limit what they can accomplish."

NAU's 4-3 victory over Denver began with the Lumberjacks taking the doubles point and the 1-0 lead. In doubles, the 'Jacks had lost the No. 2 match before being able to come back and win the No. 1 and No. 3 duo matches to win the point. In the No. 3 doubles match, NAU's Lucas Taylor and Facundo Tumosa were able to clinch the first point of the match as they took down Ignatius Castelino and Eric Morris.

In the singles matches, the Lumberjacks were able to win the No. 1, No. 5 and No. 6 matches. The Lumberjacks kept the momentum from doubles and expanded their lead to 2-0 as Handel was able to win the No. 1 singles match by a score of 7-5 and 6-4. Following Handel's win, Tom Fisher was able to record a 2-6, 6-1 and 6-4 win over Castelino of Denver.

The Lumberjacks ended up dropping the No. 4 singles, which made the score 3-1 in the match. With NAU just one point away from clinching the win, Montano was able to win the No. 6 singles over Daniel Krulig 3-6, 6-4 and 6-4.

Northern Arizona would ended up falling in the other two matches on the day as the final score was 4-3.
