40th Annual Sun Angel Classic: Day Two Recap

SUN ANGEL CLASSIC RESULTS

TEMPE, Ariz. (April 7, 2019) – Northern Arizona University's track & field program had a busy day this past Saturday competing in the final day of the 40^th Annual Sun Angel Classic hosted by Arizona State University at Sun Angel Stadium in Tempe, Ariz.
 
The meet began at 9 A.M. (MST) with the Women's Open Discus and continued late into the night ending at around 10 P.M. (MST) with the 4x400 Relay Races.
 
Across all disciplines the 'Jacks were able to have a successful weekend and put themselves in a positive momentum moving forward as the outdoor season continues.
 
"This was a full weekend of competition and we gained some valuable experience," said Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Michael Smith.
 
Sprints/Hurdles
 
Christopher Grant came in second-place among collegiate participants in the Men's 100m Dash off of a time of 10.61. Grant was also able to finish first in his heat. Carter Bracken placed in the top-third of the Men's 400m Hurdles after crossing the finish line at 54.07 to earn a 12^th-place finish.
 
Jasmine Malone earned a third-place spot among collegiately attached athletes on the leaderboard in Women's Premiere 400m Dash with a time of 55.10. The 'Jacks had a top-10 finish in the Women's 4x400 Relay. NAU came in 10^th-place after a 3:46.60 team performance by Malone, Miracle Onyemaobi, Maggie Carruth and Helena McLeod.
 
Throws
 
Matilde Roe competed in the Women's Javelin for the first time in her career with NAU and was able to take first-place among collegiate participants with a mark of 48.86m that she reached on her second attempt. Alexa Dragone set a new PR in Women's Shot Put on Saturday morning. Dragone was able to hit a mark of 37.49m on her third attempt to top her previous personal best of 36.69m set in mid-March at the 2019 Baldy Castillo Invite.
 
Parker Joens led the way for the 'Jacks in the Men's Discus after a third-place performance that was highlighted by his final throw in that event which would reach a mark of 51.18m. Joens would also place fourth among collegiate athletes in the Men's Premiere Shot Put with a mark of 17.77m. Jake Arnold was able to also have a successful day in the shot put after he placed fifth in the Men's Open round with a mark of 16.40m.
 
"There has been a lot of positive energy in our throws group," added Smith. "It is not a coincidence that they are getting better in their events. They have been competing with a contagious momentum and have really embraced each other."
 
Jumps
 
McLeod played the role of multi-event athlete well as she would place second among collegiately attached athletes in the Women's Premiere Long Jump after she leapt for a distance of 5.86m on her third attempt.
 
Cameron Rayford finished in the top half of the Men's Premiere Long Jump, taking fifth-place among those attached to schools off of a 7.15m mark that he hit on his first attempt of the evening.
 
Distance
 
Similar to the way that she led the 'Jacks in the Women's 3000m Steeplechase on Friday night, Pipi Eitel would again finish first for NAU in her event. The Women's 1500m Run saw Eitel finish in 4:33.53 to earn fourth-place. Directly behind Eitel was teammate Hannah Behunin coming in at 4:33.54 to end the event in fifth-place. Emma Sjolund would also have an impressive in that event running for a time of 4:36.58 to come in ninth-place among collegiate athletes.
 
Delaney Rasmussen set a new PR in the Women's 800m Run with a time of 2:15.51. Rasmussen had a huge improvement over her previous PR of 2:18.61 set at last season's Baldy Castillo Invite.
 
Carruth finished ninth among collegiate athletes with a time of 2:07.34 in the Women's Premiere 800m Run.
 
The NAU men's distance crew had a great showing in the Men's 1500m Run on Saturday. Cade Burks shattered his previous PR in the 1500m run event with a time of 3:51.33. His previous personal best was a time of 3:55.60 that was earned at the Baldy Castillo Invite earlier this outdoor season. He would come in second-place among collegiately attached competitors in that event. Peter Lomong was not far behind Burks as he ran in at fourth-place with a time of 3:54.38.
 
James Fitzgerald (sixth, 3:57.78), Kyle Havriliak (seventh, 3:58.46) and Beau Prince (3:59.26) would round out the top-10 in the Men's 1500m Run.
 
"There is room to grow on both the men's and women's sides across all event groups," concluded Smith. "As long as we embrace the process in the coming weeks I believe we will be able to continue to grow and improve as conference championships get closer."
